attacking police on this so-called day of love as the pakistani leaders should put it. at least 17 were killed, including a police officer. others injured and hospitalized. there is no reliable accounting of their number. the government blocking cell phone service to prevent terrorists from using their phones to detonate bombs. in iraq, thousands of iranian backed protesters taking to the streets. the mob flying iranian flags and flying large posters of the leader. in kabul, over 1000 afghans chanted death to america. they burned american flags. that anti-american demonstrations were obviously coordinated and conducted throughout much of the muslim world today. in indonesia, the united states forced to close all diplomatic

areas. shouts of death to america filling the air. coffins draped and american flags were burned. in malaysia, u.s. citizens told to stay away from the american embassy. this development tonight. the libyan government admitted they will be of little help in the search for the killers of ambassador chris stevens. a surprised expression of empathy and comprehension from president obama who said he understands why the muslim world has erupted in the demonstrations marked by all out american hatred. >> the natural protest that are because of the video were used

dipped to just 49% while disapproval is up to 46%. a "new york times" approval found it at 50% and disapproval only at or be 6%. the president was blunt today at a campaign in virginia. he is keeping americans safe at home and abroad. >> we have to make sure that not only our military, but also our diplomats overseas are protected. >> pedagogue officials claimed u.s. marines were in another part of lidia. then admitted that was not true. state department officials said there were no libyan guards inside the perimeter of the u.s. consulate and had to walk that back. >> you hate to think the president would purposely mislead the american people, but it sure likes it -- it sure looks like it to me. >> any notion that they have misled the american people --

they maintained the only reason it has changed is because new facts have emerged because this is an ongoing investigation. nonetheless, it is clear republicans are using this change an account to continue to challenge the president's credibility. lou: ed, is there any indication that the white house intent and some timeframe i must certainly will not be soon, because we are approaching the second week since the murders of our ambassador and three other americans in benghazi and just the right of rage across the muslim world that he will somehow go before cameras and explain to the american people what is happening with the obama policy, with this government foreign policy and response to all of this over the course of these two weeks. >> this administration has been very scattered and their response to all of this.

blank out exactly what their principles are moving forward could clear this up. i suspect that the next chance we may see something like that would be in the presidential debates where romney has an opportunity to really challenge the president about that arab spring in particular, but foreign policy and security in general. lou: it is surprising in a presidential campaign how eager candidates usually are for a time on national television that they would not seize that opportunity. ed henry, white house chief correspondent. joining me now who serves as our, one of our national security analyst, robert maginnis. great to have you with us. fox news contributor, john

bolton. great to see both of you. let me first turn to the idea that this president is saying that this is a natural reaction. i would like to first get your reaction to these comments. >> the natural protests is outraged over the video. it was used by extremists to see if they could directly harm u.s. interests. lou: your reaction to what he said. let me begin with you, bob. >> we have known that benghazi has been a hot bed of terrorism for a long time. 9/11 and there are plenty of notice is out there. the fact that we had an ambassador in benghazi without a

significant security detail just does not make any sense. certainly given his knowledge o that particular area, this is ludicrous what has happened and, unfortunately, i think it has just put a fire under a lot of other people across the world. lou: are you at all surprised, ambassador, that the president would say this is a natural response to this movie that he understands that natural response? >> no. that is his view of the arab world. he told us his and his june 2009 speech in cairo that the middle east and muslim world have been the victims of the west. victims of colonialism. victims in the cold war. victims and the world of terror. now he will come in and changed everything. no more war on terror. no more assertive u.s. president and that should change the relationship of the muslim world

to the united states. i guess that has not worked. he has not gotten over that yet. it shows when you had that distorted view of the world why it is impossible to formulate policies that effectively protect american interests or even american diplomats. lou: the president was rather condescending when talking with the anchors at the town hall meeting as he explained the balance of the checks and balances of american government. where is congress, where is the oversight here, bob, when it comes to foreign policy and what is transpiring and, for that matter, where is governor romney? >> we certainly would like to hear a strong rebuttal to this. yesterday the senate committee heard from the fbi director and the director of counterintelligence,

counterterrorism. they both basically said this problem is getting much worse than it has in the past. international terrorism and even home grown terrorism. the president ever from the very beginning is crumbling before our very eyes. i would hope that mr. romney would see this as an opportunity to come out very strongly and say, look, look at what has happened in egypt, libya, syria, iran, of course, is taking over iraq. you are having problems and saudia arabia, pakistan, afghanistan seems to be going in the wrong direction. there is not a place in that entire area where we can call terribly friendly at this point and quite frankly could explode. lou: there are a host of questions, obviously, that pertain to the days we are living through here. ambassador, very quickly, the idea that the hundred governor romney has not responded with great sharp focus, he is

disappointing to many. there seems to as well be, as i brought up, with ed henry at the white house, not only has our president not addressed our american people, the man who wants his job is not taking on this issue with any kind of vigor or vitality. >> he came out very quickly after that ridiculous statement by our embassy in cairo on september the 11th, governor romney did. he was criticized not only by the democrats, but by everyone. lou: you are not saying that he is some how now constrained because he is so sensitive. surely he understands the obligation here. >> the national media is not covering this story effectively. although political consultants say stay away from poor policy. this is a huge mistake for the entire republican party, frankly. lou: we thank you very much. as always, great to have you

year and this white house. just wait until after the election. defense contractors urged to send out pink slips to their employees who will be laid off because of sequestration. they ask if they wait until after the election to the credit of those corporations. the prime minister of israel urged to hold any steps taken against iran until after the election. the tepid response to the administration of that al qaeda attack and the murder of four americans in benghazi on the anniversary of september 11. do not do this before election day? what about the fiscal cliff but expect congress has already left town. looks like we will have to wait until after the election.

[ talking over each other ] lou: when you say to me that they will do tax reform, it just falls off the lips so easily. the idea that this congress, democrats and republicans alike, with their incapacity for detail and comprehension of the choices , the public policy choices they are making, it rains me to death to think they would touch the u.s. tax code. >> the good news for you is it would be the next congress. a 15% approval rating. i think that the reality is this, everybody is pushing things until after the election. after the election, we will have this conversation. at that point, i believe deeply that the international rating agencies will say enough action on the debt, action on the entitlements, we cannot take

♪ lou: given romney answering critics today to claimed he did not pay any income taxes. you know, senator harry reid has to be very upset. governor romney releasing his 2011 income tax returns with tax rates he paid over the past two decades as well. we have the report. >> after months of pressure mitt romney released his 2011 tax returns on a friday afternoon. documents showed that gross adjusted income totaled $13 million for the year. they paid almost 2 million for its effective tax rate of 14%. amounted to one-third of their income but on the klan direction

♪ lou: joining us now, the "a-team," former special assistant said president george w. bush, former freedom watch president, bush staffer, fortune magazine washington columnist. good to have you all with us. let's start with first the idea that this anti american rage that is erupting across the muslim world, why is there no response by this president? why is there no nothing expressed by governor romney? >> well, this is part of the obama strategy of distort, distract, and divide. the fact that the president did not take a strong stand when everyone knew what they saw clear, concise statement by the president, outrage is that apology. romney is being handed a test of foreign policy. is he going to be allowed to rise to the occasion and push back against the president and his light to this country?

united states will not settle for a sovereign attack and are saurel overseas. lou: so far they have. this is not a big deal with the voters because president obama still persists in his need. he is, in fact, in florida, ohio, and virginia now in the lead in those states. the governors are republican. obama, the latest fox business poll has given a greater credit by the citizens of those three states for his ability they handle the economy that governor romney. it is a significant lead that is being built here by the president and those three important federal swing states. what do you make of it? >> i think we have several weeks to go and the debates coming up which will clearly be a key. all of this comes down to a question of leaders. particularly the middle east.

our real leader, george bush called have gone and not called this a natural protest. he would have not only defended the ability, the right of free speech and a free and democratic society, he would have explained it, perhaps pointed to the fact that we need things like broadway plays that are -- that make fun of the mormon religion and the book of mormon and we don't have protests. we need somebody up there explaining. lou: it's pretty clear that it is fine if the president of the united states attacks mormon isn't, not so clear if the governor were to go after muslims or whenever that it would be appropriate at all as far as this national media. the national media has joined. >> there is no question about it. >> that is the other thing. very complex set into inflating these events in the middle east. libya, from the get go, clear that was a terrorist attack in
